Now well established as one of southern Thailand's most popular destinatiora the two islands known as Phi Phi Islands look breathtakingly beautiful as you approach from the sea, their classic arcs of pure white sand framed by dramatic cliffs and lapped by turquoise water so clear that the banks of cabbage coral and yellow-striped tiger fish are clearly visible from the surface. Thing: don't look quite so pretty once you land on the larger island, Koh Phi Phi Don, however, whose core overflows with dozens of poorly designed bungalow developments and tourist enterprises, and where large swathes of land seem to be permanently under construction, disfigured by building rubble and piles of rotting rubbish. The problem has worsened since uninhabited sister island Koh Phi Phi Leh - under national marine park protection on account of its lucrative bird's-nest business (see box on p.395) - gained worldwide attention as the location for the movie The Beach in 1999. Since then, businesses on Phi Phi Don have capitalized mercilessly on the islands' increasing popularity resulting in some of the worst-value accommodation in the whole of Thailand and a less than welcoming atmosphere. There are exceptions of course, particularly on the northern beaches, but be warned that many tourists find Phi Phi a disappointment.
